Frequently Asked Questions

What guidelines do Spiritual Directors follow?

I adhere to the Code of Ethics of Spiritual Directors International. This includes strict confidentiality between the director (me) and the directee (you).

What spiritual practices are used in a spiritual direction session?

Prayer, Silence, Scripture, Gospel contemplation, Poems, Lectio Divina, and more, are practices I may include in a session, depending on your comfort level.

Isn’t this just therapy?

In the same way therapy allows space to process what is going on internally, spiritual direction can be a helpful practice or discipline to create space to hear from God and listen to what He is up to. Just as a counsellor comes alongside and listens non-judgmentally and empathetically, so too does a spiritual director, with an ear also tuned to what God may be saying.

Can’t you just tell me what decision to make?

The role of the director is to help you process and sit with whatever is coming up for you in the making of a decision, and create space to hear from Jesus. But they can’t see the future. They can journey with you in big decisions and small ones. Even if you don’t have decisions to make, they can give you a place to process feelings, relationships, life, and faith in a space that is Christ-centred and sacred.
